Common Scalp Conditions: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments

Common Scalp Conditions: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments

We all know a healthy scalp is key to healthy hair growth. However, our scalp isn't always in the state we need it to be in. Scalp issues happen, it just is what it is. That’s why we’re going to inform you all about common scalp issues, symptoms, and treatments.

SCALP ISSUE #1: DANDRUFF/SEBORRHEIC DERMATITIS

○What are the causes of dandruff/seborrheic dermatitis?

- Not washing your hair enough

- Stress

- Harsh chemicals or detergents

- Extremely dry or oily scalp

- Hormonal changes/illness

- pH imbalance on the scalp

- Overgrowth of bacteria and/or fungus on the scalp

○What does dandruff look like?

You can tell you have dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis if you see white or light yellow flakes on the scalp. It's basically a build-up of dead skin. You also may have redness, scaling and an itchy scalp, and the flakes get worse with scratching.

○How to get rid of dandruff/seborrheic dermatitis:

If you're dealing with an extreme amount of dandruff, you may need to visit a dermatitis or trichologist. For the most part though, you should be able to it at home by washing your hair often(once a week or every two weeks), avoiding oils on your scalp, as well as any harsh soaps, gels or products. A scalp scrub or serum with ingredients that keep bacteria, fungus and inflammation under control can also be very helpful when it comes to creating a healthy scalp environment to alleviate dandruff/seborrheic dermatitis.

SCALP ISSUE #2: TRACTION ALOPECIA

○What causes traction alopecia?

- Too much pressure on the hair follicles ( too many tight styles like ponytails, buns, & braids or manipulation such as brushing too hard)

○How to tell if you have traction alopecia:

If you tend to wear braids, weaves, tight ponytails, etc. and you're experiencing a receding hairline or any balding, that is a clear sign that you may have traction alopecia.

○How to get rid of traction alopecia:

It's not going to be an overnight process so the number one thing is to be patient. It is possible to reverse traction alopecia in some cases. If your hair follicles are still alive (scalp isn’t shiny and smooth), start by avoiding tight styles. Also, you can use light-weight products with stimulating and nourishing ingredients along with daily scalp massage to help wake up your hair follicles and stimulate growth in your thinning areas.

SCALP ISSUE #3: SCALP PSORIASIS

○What causes scalp psoriasis?

Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin disorder that occurs when your immune system sends faulty signals and skin cells grow too quickly.

○How to tell if you have scalp psoriasis:

You notice red patches with silver-ish scales on your scalp.

○How to get rid of psoriasis:

Keep your scalp clean, fresh, and moisturized- Wash your hair frequently and use oils or scalp serums with anti-inflammatory and exfoliating ingredients to nourish your scalp.

SCALP ISSUE #4: ITCHY SCALP (SCALP PRURITUS)

○What causes itchy scalp?

- Product build-up

- Dry scalp

- Dandruff

- pH imbalance

- Excessive bacteria/fungus

○How to tell if you have itchy scalp:

Your scalp is extremely itchy, it is not a normal itch! You may even start to see hair loss.

○How to get rid of itchy scalp:

- Wash your hair often to keep your scalp fresh. You don't want your scalp to be too dry or oily so make sure you don't overdo/underdo it.

- Avoid putting heavy butters and oils on your scalp, it'll clog the follicle and cause build-up, which leads to itchiness.

- Always use a clean scarf when wrapping your hair!

- Keep your scalp clean between washes
